Mighty God, as this dear reader reads and prays along with this devotional thought, bless her or his life with that which You deem best. In Jesus' Name, amen.
A dear colleague recently wrote that we don't whistle enough any more. I fear that we don't sing enough any more. When was the last time you heard someone humming a tune? Does that reflect the times in which we are living? Is fear draining our soul's best way of expression, music? In a very beautiful passage we hear Mary, the mother of Jesus, singing this song:
My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. 52 He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever."
This was Mary's faith song. After being told she was to be the mother of the Anointed One, Jesus our Lord, she sang this song. Read that out loud in a musical way, hear the faith she shows in the act she will participate in. It was a faith act, a worshipful act, a joyful act. God had remembered God's people and Mary sang of God's mercy for her and "for those who fear him from generation to generation."
I strongly believe that our singing should be based on our faith not our fears. Our lips should be singing praises to God out of hope if nothing else. We should lift high the praises due our God because we are still in God's hands and God will not let us down. God's great gift of faith is ours. Receive it. Unwrap it. And make it yours.
PRAYER: Living God, let my voice sing today. May the tunes of hope spring forth victorious over those thoughts of dread and doom. May I witness to the Living God that lives in me, rather than the negative thoughts of fear and worry. May I be truly, in every sense of the word, an instrument that glorifies you! I pray this in Jesus' Name, amen.
Have a great and blessed day in the Lord!

Study Guide: Luke 1:46b-55 contains the song of Mary contained The Magnificat. Some have called this the first Christian declaration by anyone and who better than His mother to declare her faith in Jesus?
