The Power and Presence of God

When Israel went out from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language, Judah became God’s sanctuary, Israel his dominion. The sea looked and fled; Jordan turned back. The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs. Why is it, O sea, that you flee?  O Jordan, that you turn back? O mountains, that you skip like rams? O hills, like lambs? Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water. (Psalm 114)

It may have been in a movie or perhaps a television show, where some hunters were frustrated with people opposed to their hunting.  And one of the characters said, "If Walt Disney hadn't made animals talk, we wouldn't be in this mess."  Or something along those lines.  They were referring to Bambi, the animated story of a deer who loses his mother to hunters.  Yet, here is the psalmist animating creation in an interesting way.  As he remembers the Exodus, he illustrates the power and presence of God to make creation do things that it wouldn't normally do.  And such is the power of God, to bring change to the most vilest of people and make them civil, decent, and loving.  Look at the images that the psalmist has painted as doing what they normally do not do:  The sea looked and fled.  The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs.  God was able to split the sea, as we read yesterday in Exodus, and the mountains in different scenes provided things they normally do not, all because of the presence of God.

God has that ability to bless us even when we think we're beyond or not worthy of blessing, in ways that we cannot explain, nor do we need to explain anything, just enjoy and give God all honor and praise.  It well may be that the sea that you think you can't cross will suddenly flee from you.  The mountain that is stopping your forward progress may skip alongside you and you begin again your journey towards where you need to be.  The rocks and flints that have been hurting your forward progress may soon be the soothing waters of healing your feet have needed.  Call on the power and presence of God into your life.

PRAYER:  Loving God of power and presence, come into my life and bless me.  Bless me in such a way that others will want to know more about You and what You can do for them; and then, let us all join together in blessing you with our obedience and service.  In Christ Jesus we pray, amen.

Have a great and blessed day in the Lord!  Move a mountain today!
